On the 1st and 2nd of December 2026 at 20:00, Klang Systematiek presents Ludwig van by Mauricio Kagel at Schwere Reiter, Munich.
Created in 1970, Ludwig van is one of the landmark works of twentieth-century music theatre. Fragments of Beethoven appear and disappear, film and live performance intertwine, and familiar musical gestures are continually transformed. Rather than presenting Beethoven as a monument, Mauricio Kagel transforms his music into a playful and thought-provoking exploration of memory, tradition, and the ways we listen.
For this production, Klang Systematiek is joined by Stefan Winter, founder of the label Winter & Winter and a long-time collaborator of Kagel. Using projections from Kagel’s original 1970 film, Winter creates a visual environment in constant dialogue with the performers. Sound and image unfold together, dissolving the boundaries between concert, cinema, and installation, and inviting the audience into a richly immersive theatrical experience.
More than fifty years after its creation, Ludwig van feels as fresh and provocative as ever. Full of wit, invention, and unexpected moments of beauty, the work invites us to encounter Beethoven with new ears, discovering that tradition is not something fixed, but something continually reinvented through performance and listening.
